Job Description

Director, People Operations

REMOTE, USA | PEOPLE | FULL-TIME

Density is growing rapidly. We have offices in San Francisco, New York City, Syracuse, and cross-functional team members in 14 states and 4 countries. We run a mixed model — co-located in some geos and distributed in others. The ability to work on and willingness to invest in a team with this structure is important; especially for a role in People. We don’t believe culture is exclusively in the room. We think it resides in the quality of our internal communications, the transparency we share with our colleagues, our values, our bar for exceptional contribution, our unwillingness to tolerate self-involved attitudes, and the regular investments we make in bringing teams together (post-COVID).

At Density, we build the infrastructure necessary to measure how people use space. The result of distributing this platform is lower emissions, less waste, better access, safer buildings, and better designed cities. It is a long term pursuit and one we could use your help achieving.

Helping us reinforce and mature our hiring and recruitment processes as we grow is a prerequisite to building an enduring company.

We believe:

  • Great teams can create virtuous cycles
  • Diverse teams build better products
  • Exceptional work comes from sweating the details
  • Seeking feedback is necessary to improve
  • Self-awareness and awareness of others can be a superpower
  • You can’t shortcut or clone culture
  • “Culture fit” can create homogeneity so, better to measure candidates against values

In this role, you will:

  • Be a generalist
  • Help source, recruit, and hire new team members
  • Help design on our hiring process
  • Work with teams to develop compensation and titling bands
  • Design a humane and useful performance review process
  • Build an equitable approach to career development
  • Act as a coach, partner, and confidant to our managers and executive team
  • Advocate for and serve as a resource to Density employees
  • Collaborate with the People team and leadership to build an evolving, healthy, durable culture
  • Hold us accountable to our values and reinforce them
  • Manage internal communications
  • Bring calm to problems
  • Help retain our team

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A background of 5-7 years in human resources or people operations. Preferably in a fast-growing technology company
  • Exceptional writing skills
  • Experience finding, recruiting, and closing hard to get talent
  • Experience identifying and sourcing candidates from under-represented communities
  • The ability to spot talent and create process to enable others to do the same
  • Experience partnering with and influencing senior leaders to help drive their people strategy
  • Experience working with both technical and non-technical individuals, teams, and managers
  • A clear, approachable, and friendly communication style
  • Strong customer service orientation
  • Experience implementing people programs including performance coaching, employee relations, compensation review process, HR compliance, and employee development
  • Strong analytical and project management skills and a proven ability to design clear process
